One For The Road

Happy Days in the Maritime Alps - here's a pic that missed the cut a few days ago.

Note that I've now replaced the original image with a better version taken with a proper camera!

You should have had the backlight setting on your camera. The shadow is almost facing you.
It’s still worthy of a viewing all the same.

I was trying to be artistic, Alan, insofar as the 30Kb photo setting on the Blackberry will permit.
I see that not all the photos have uploaded, so I may replace some of them with images taken with a proper camera - probably just as amateurish, though!
'Backlight setting'?

Sorry Martin,
I will retract my comment.
I clicked enlarge photo and missed the sent by Blackberry message. My apologies, i know the BB limitations. I will check out the options when i get chance.

No problem Alan, I don't have any aspirations as a photographer, I just take snapshots whilst out for a walk.
Lots of them - between us we have 1,500 to sort through from the last few days!

You under estimate yourself. Some of your photographs are superb.

Hi Martin,
Just for the record there is no backlight function on the BB phone and to be honest it’s about as basic as it can get for features.

Just been catching up on your blog and came across your stay at Refuge des Merveilles. In 2005 I walked the GR5 taking the Alpes Martime alternative finish, and a friend joined me for the last few days. We arrived at that refuge after a long hot day and were refused a stay because it was full, and we walked on for another four hours or so to Relais d'Argent. My friend was not fit, and his boots fell to bits. That was one of the toughest days I can remember clouded by the intractability of the guardian at Les Merveilles.

Conrad, from our research before the trip it was clear that this refuge is almost always fully booked, mainly by large guided parties visiting the rock engravings. These days it's simple to make a booking, but on a long trek you'd have to do this a couple of days in advance from one of the other refuges. We did notice that they had some emergency beds, so perhaps you should have shown more signs of distress! There were quite a few folk bivvying nearby - another solution.
The Rifugios on the Italian side are much quieter and one of them, Rif Questa - very small, despite being fully booked, very courteously allowed an unexpected German family to stay (the Guardian relinquished his own quarters, I think). There was a 'can do' attitude that was very refreshing.

What a lovely holiday you have had in the Maritime Alps! I really enjoyed reading this series of posts, thanks!

Thanks Maria, it really was a great trip - easy travelling, good company, friendly locals, superb weather, good accommodation, easy to organise, and relatively cheap.
We commend a visit to the Maritime Alps, especially the Italian side.
