Sunday 29 January 2017 – Another Outing from P17

2906trail53

A great day for skiing. Initially sunny, but flurries started and intensified before we got to Renaud Cabin, which was absolutely heaving when we arrived. We shared a table with some friendly Bosnian immigrants. Canada continues to welcome such folk as these nice people, who arrived many years ago after four years of war in their former Sarajevo home.

Sue joined us later following a navigational misunderstanding.

The camera eventually came out as we approached Taylor Lake, where the following three pictures were taken.

Towards the end of the ski the blue wax got a bit sticky and we all finished up with great cobs of ice on our skis. The open section of trail 53 was quite atmospheric – see top picture.

For the record: P17 > #52 > #50 > #55 > Renaud Cabin > #55 > #51 > #53 > Lac Kingsbury > P17 = 31km, 542 metres ascent, taking 4 hours 30 mins (3.36 moving time)

It's Helen's pavlova - delicious - we will try to recreate it.

Penguin Hill was so named by an early ski club president who found a penguin as he forged a short trail linking two parts of Gatineau Park. There was some scepticism as his colleagues felt it unlikely that the penguin could have made an 11,000 mile journey from its home in the Southern hemisphere. So an expert was summoned to inspect the penguin, which was rather tired. Unfortunately, the penguin flew out of the president's window shortly before the expert arrived. This led the expert to doubt the claim that the bird was in fact a penguin. A penguin would have been unlikely to suddenly regain the power of flight. He concluded that the bird was more likely to have been a Razorbill Auk, just a bit tired and off course. However, the president stuck with the 'Penguin' name, as 'Razorbill Auk Hill' just didn't quite have the same ring to it!
