A Plan for Saturday 2 March 2019

I have been asked to plan a walk for Sue and some of her colleagues, to take place on Saturday 2 March – so here’s the plan.

As Rivington Hall Barn is closed to the public on Saturdays, we will now start and finish at the Great House Barn, pictured above.

The plan is to meet at 10.15 and start walking at 10.30. I’ll be inside the Great House Barn soon after it opens at 10.00.

Directions:

M61 junction 6

A6027 to Horwich

Turn left at the big roundabout at the end of the road, taking the A673 all the way through Horwich

After a couple of miles reach another roundabout. Go straight on then right after about 30 yards – down Lever Park Avenue, which becomes Rivington Lane

Continue for 1.5 miles to reach Great House Barn on the left

Park in the car park here, near ‘Go Ape’, or turn right and park on the left up the lane that leads to Rivington Hall Barn

Note that this is an amendment to previous instructions.

Before lunch we will take an anticlockwise route to Rivington Pike, where the tower pictured below marks the high point of our walk.

We then descend back to the Great House Barn, via the Pigeon Tower in which Lady Leverhulme had her sewing room.

Here’s the planned route – 7.5 km (about 5 miles), with less than 250 metres of ascent. It will take two to three hours.

We can enjoy a light lunch in the Great House Barn, or drive to a nearby pub.
After lunch I’ll be happy to continue by way of a further short walk that will take in 'The Castle', an incomplete scaled down replica of Liverpool Castle, intended as a ruin.

Here’s this second route – about 3.5 km (less than 2 miles) along flat paths. This will take rather less than an hour.

Returning to the Barn, we may be ready for more coffee, cakes or ice cream, or even all three.

I hope this meets approval. If changes are made following any feedback, I’ll edit this page accordingly.

Otherwise, I look forward to seeing everyone in the café next Saturday morning.
