TGO Challenge 2016

1101tgoroute

Sue and I catch the 6.14 train to Strathcarron in the morning. Our bags are packed for our fifth and tenth crossings of Scotland respectively. We’ve plotted an easy route – 200 miles with 10000 metres ascent, mostly low level, so we haven’t really paid much attention to the weight of our rucksacks – 15 kg for me and 10 kg for Sue. We’ll be meeting a friend with a car after three days, so any excess gear can be packed off back home then.

Our route is shown above: Strathcarron > Struy > Inverness > Grantown > Tomintoul > Ballater > Tarfside > North Water Bridge > Montrose. For the first time I haven’t uploaded detailed route maps to our website, nor have I produced a route card with estimated timings. Will I be lost without that? No. Furthermore, having got maps at 1:25000 on my phone, which also has a GPS application, the Garmin GPS has been left out of the luggage.

Anyway, I’ll be reporting briefly as we potter across the country, and we hope to meet old and new friends along the way. We wish everyone a safe and pleasurable stroll and look forward to the party in Montrose a week on Thursday.

Here’s Sue, enjoying day two of last year’s event, on An Socach with the north Loch Mullardoch ridge stretching into the distance.

  3. Have a good one M and S. I hope your electrical bits work all the way. I presume you will have at least a magnetic compass with you if not a paper map.

  4. We have two sets of paper maps Alan, and a magnetic compass. It's just the route card that I haven't bothered with this time as it's such an easy route.

But we already have a technical problem as Sue's iPhone has decided that it is happy to receive emails but it has lost the will to send them.

  5. Ok. My mistake, i did think it was extremely unlikely that you wouldn't take a map but i thought maybe you were testing your extensive knowledge of finding your way in the dark.
Sorry cannot help you with the i phone thing except suggest checking your outgoing mail server settings are the same as original.

  6. Just a thought. Make sure the passwords in both incoming mail and outgoing mail settings are the same. Cannot think why it should work one day but not the next but its worth checking.

  7. Thanks Alan, my fear is that if I start fiddling with Sue's phone it may stop working altogether. I've had an iPad for over a year now and whilst it receives emails it has resisted all my attempts to send them. Not a very friendly gadget as it also turns it also sticks a finger up to Outlook.

  8. email settings are usually done automatically. It sounds as though your ipad problem maybe a wrong Port number. If it was me and getting nowhere i would either call apple support who i have always found to be very helpful or go into the apple store in trafford centre or Manchester Arndale and get it sorted. It will be something simple.
What Sheila usually does is, if the phone is sending and receiving emails but the ipad isn't then open up the email settings on the phone and compare them to what the ipad is set at and bring the ipad in line with the phone.
Setting up email from scratch is usually a very easy job as i said initially the task is automatic.
    Are people still using Outlook?

  9. I run several different email accounts on my iPhone and iPad - mostly without problem- although sometimes I have to re-start my phone for the gmail app to synchronize. Lots of tips for trouble-shooting email here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201419 in case you're bored...

  10. Have a good crossing both of you. Never had any problems with mail on my iPad, Lynne's iPad or my iPhone. I don't use Outlook though.

  11. Thanks everyone. Normally Sue always has her iPad for emails, and I have my phone, so we haven't really bothered to try too hard to make the gadget we don't use work. And we have always used Outlook - I'm not aware of any alternative...

But please do wait until we get home to proceed further with this discussion, or send a separate email in due course. I think Sue's main reason for bringing her phone is to enable her to sync her Fitbit!
