Moss Campion and the Fanes at Dusk

Moss Campion, nicknamed 'marmot bread', is common throughout the alps, and is also found in the UK. We recently spotted a clump near the summit of Ben Avon. The small pink flowers sit on bright green, moss like foliage, on damp screes and rocks up to 3700 metres altitude. It can easily be confused with Alpine Rock-jasmine, but the flowers of the latter have a yellow centre, whereas the flowers of Moss Campion have toothed petals and white stamens.

The pictures were taken in the Dolomites near Corvara, on 21 June, 2007, when we enjoyed a wonderful sunset, with the evening shadows slowly creeping over the Fanes group as we watched from Haus Valentin in Badia.
