The sand is the other side of the water, where you have to pay to go on the beach. True, we stopped digging for a while to view the cheapskate scenery (bottom right) blown up here: http://www.topwalks.com/nice.html It seemed the right thing to do at the time.

You would have thought that paying all that money to travel all that way to Nice, they would have chucked in a bit of sand?
It looks like they are lying on one of those French drains they put in alongside the motorway carriageway.
Difficult to dig a hole six feet deep in all those rocks..
