The Kindle is 18 months old, so out of warranty.
I think this is a terminal problem.
The lesson to be learnt is ‘however good you may think your Kindle case is (my Kindle was kept between two sheets of plywood like material in an envelope), if you keep it for more than three months in a rucksack that is also used as a sitmat, it may eventually fail’.
Judging by what I can see of the screen, at least it seems to have saved the house from the litter of 11 books that have been read and a further 23 that may have been partly read or are ‘pending’ or for reference (eg ‘phone and camera manuals – the ability to keep PDF files on the Kindle is very useful).

Looks like a fractured LCD although it could be a duff driver IC. Have a look at http://www.consoleparts4u.co.uk.
I can help if needed.

Thanks JJ. It looks as if the parts would cost £40 to £55 and I'd have to install them myself (ie trade some cake with you). A replacement would only be £69, so I think I'll consider the old one to be a write-off. Some of the higher spec versions are very tempting!
See you soon.

Martin mine did the same thing after about 15 months. It was out of warranty but I phoned to report the fault. Somehow I managed to sweet talk the guy on the phone into sending me a replacement. In fact they sent me the 3G model rather than the standard wi-fi one I had. Worth a shot. I said that I LOVE my kindle and could not manage without it. Being nice helps get your way on the phone.
Give it a go!
Not sure whether I have the nerve, James!
Have you tried asking Amazon for a replacement. A friend of mine has had 4 replacements over a few years. If you buy a few books they see it as a loss leader.
