Sunday 27 July 2014 - Summer Holiday - Day 31 - Montreuil-sur-Mer to Timperley

Another lovely day for the final stage of our journey home.

Yesterday our passage along tree lined roads was interspersed with periods during which we passed through forests of huge, silent white structures in fields of corn, looking like defeated relics from a War of the Worlds battle scene. Perhaps it's time to demolish these monstrosities that tower over the old water towers.

In this morning's soft light the static monsters appeared to morph into the fog, which vaporised as we approached Calais.

Then the tunnel, and the rigours of the M25, before an easy last stage to Timperley.

Last night we enjoyed a further exploration of Montreuil - Sue is pictured on our walk around the outside of the town walls. A portal led into the town, where every street seemed to house restaurants. Decisions! After a couple of laps around town we were no closer to finding somewhere that we felt would match yesterday's lunch experience. So the supermarket won the day, with some very tasty fare that was consumed in the last of the sunshine on the campsite, after which we showed Carl and Ootie, from near Stuttgart, the interesting route to town from the campsite. The path runs inside the walls for a short length.

On return to Timperley we found the garden in fine fettle, and the house probably the cleanest it has been since Sue bought it. Thanks go to P&P for looking after it so well whilst we've been away.

And I was right that watching Lewis Hamilton was more interesting than reading this will be.

That's it for this trip. The book will be out in September. (Haha!)

So its back to beans on toast then in sunny Timperley sur la canale.
Wonderful trip Martin and Sue.

Smoked salmon actually. .. this IS Timperley!
The towpath is closed. Boo hoo. But when it re-opens it shouldn't get muddy. Hurrah!
I'll be in touch soon re a short walk and return of the sleeping mat. Assume you won't be at the backpackers meal tonight (Wilmslow).

I wasn’t down to go Martin but i am under the weather at the moment. A bit of food poisoning i think. Must be the beans. No rush about the mat.

That's unusual - beans don't usually have that effect. Are you sure you washed them?
Hope you feel better soon...

What, take all the tomato sauce off. Ha.

Sounds like a great summer vacation, all things considered. Was particularly interested in the Alta Via 1 write-ups, as I have a covert wish to tackle one of these some time. Well, I say that, but with 2-3 breaks a year available and a zillion places to go, maybe it's just somewhere else that's "on the list" at the minute! Still, one can dream .....

AV1 is an excellent route Jules. The Cicerone guide is excellent and you can plan either short or long days according to preference.
Ours was more ambitious than most.

I don't know if you've seen, but all the AV routes feature in an article in the current Trek & Mountain magazine. Worth a look if you see a copy, but probably not detailed enough for someone already familiar with the area and routes!

I'm not familiar with that mag, Jules, but if it features 'all' the AV routes in one article, it's either a giant article or a very brief overview!

Yes, Alan. The tomato sauce has recently been identified with serious carcinogens according to a recent article in New Scientist.
Do take care!

We only buy the best Aldi beans, but i will get my taster to try them first in future. Of course i always put Cumin in with them to counteract any nasties.

Phreerunner said...

Very wise Alan, though I would respectfully point out that these so called 'best' beans still managed to poison you. Perhaps you have a weak stomach and need to do more Plank exercise?

12 (now 13) comments on one post - is this a record?

'Grounded', on 8 September 2013, got 22 comments, but I hope there won't be a similar posting this year, Nick.
Some earlier postings got more comments, but with so many people blogging these days comments are fairly sparse (some blogs get masses of comments, this one doesn't).
Whilst there are few comments, page viewings are around 30 to 50 per posting. Others may follow via a 'reader' and their stats don't show, and some postings pick up lots of subsequent viewings as a result of featuring highly in search engine results.
But really, it's just my on-line diary, and I don't aim to gain new readers, though it's nice when the postings are used as a resource, and it's good to hear from strangers who sometimes email me to discuss their plans and get further input.
All good fun - Sue and I hope you are enjoying life.
