Tuesday 23 August - Venice (by Helen)
At Helen's
request for no more hiking in the rain, it was decided to spend the day in Venice (a 200 mile round
trip). A successful drive brought us to the parking lot for 11:30, from where Martin
walked to St Mark's Square
and Ken, Helen and Sue took the Vaparetto along the Grand Canal and under the Rialto Bridge.
Venice was very crowded but we did manage to go
up the Campanile when the queue diminished a little. At one point the square
was flooded and Ken and Helen had to paddle across to meet Martin and Sue.
We saw the
outside of St Mark's, St Zacharias, the Doges
Palace and Bridge of Sighs.
Had a tourist lunch of pasta, and all walked back to the car at the end of the
day. The weather was finally kind, the rain having stopping about halfway on
the journey to Venice.
On the way home we stopped in Pieve di Cadore, the birthplace of Titian (Tiziano),
for a good meal at about half the price of those in Cortina.
A successful day
but I think we are looking forward to hiking again tomorrow.
Below, a selection from the many pictures taken by Martin and Sue. Click on any of them to obtain a slideshow that you can scroll through.
