Here's another image from the Alps - the Susa Valley area. I think the flower is Orange Mullein, but the caterpillar was a complete mystery.
The original text of this blog - headed 'A Mystery Caterpillar' suggested that "Perhaps that guru of all things lepidopteran, Weird Darren, will come to my aid. What is it, Darren?"
Within the hour, Darren had indeed correctly identified the little blighter, brightly coloured so as to remind anything that may consider eating it that it tastes most unpleasant. But not before George - London Backpacker - had provided the excellent and informative link to the UK moths website.
So, well done and thank you, George and Darren, and I will have another mystery item for you tomorrow.

If WD doesn't know; the answer is here. :-)
mullein moth lava
and very lucky my book has it in, it surprised me that it did.
BUt beaten by George by the looks of it.
Great picture by the way.
Thanks George
I should have 'googled' it, I know, but I'm still trying to catalogue around 1500 images from the Alps....

PS TGOC 2009: Go for it - you'll have any number of people from whom to seek route advice. My advice is: plan your route then pay Alan Sloman a visit to discuss it.
Thanks also WD - your comment arrived whilst I was commenting on Geoge's comment!
Now I will edit the original text!
Looks more like one of Darren's many buffs! (He has hundreds you know... and we all thought he had a stove addiction)
I don't envy you that task :-0 that's the only problem with holidays sorting the photos out afterwards.
Thanks for the advice on the TGOC :-)
It doesn't pay to be too cheeky about your chef, Alan, they should be handled with great care.
BTW, last time I saw Darren he was wearing two buffs. Maybe he does have another addiction!
I have to say, the Young Gentleman looked after me handsomely!
it was the great cost of the fuel that realy hit me. ^____^
Alan and I should of planned it better then he wouldn't of needed that heavy gas cannister of his that he carried for two days.
I'm looking forward to George doing the TGOC, especially his video diary, with lego effects ^_^
