Lechtal Alps Backpack - Day 5 - Hanauer Hutte to Steinsee Hutte

The view back to Hanauer Hutte - can you spot it?

Wednesday 16 July 1980 - diarist: Dave - Hanauer Hut camp to Steinseehutte

Original plans to be up at 6:00 and off by 7:30 came to nothing due to The Rain.

Dave was inter tent porter (tea boy). Nick and Dave in the Tramp (tent) got decamped exceedingly fast due in part to their practiced wet weather technique (see 'The Tanhill Trundle') (4 to 6 July 1980 - report pending), but mainly due to a stream having formed down the middle of the tent.

Plans to go to the Wurtemberger Haus were scrapped and we decided to go to the Steinseehutte, which involved going over the 'Ostliche Dremelscharte' (OD).

The decamping in the rain was done in a jovial manner today. We stopped in at the hut for a glass of tea each. We set off up the OD at a good pace and reached the top with just one rest break halfway up.

Due to the mist we soon lost sight of the hut. As we climbed the final part, it began snowing fairly heavily.

After a brief stop for a photo and changing into our downhill gear (overtrousers for glissading), we followed the Blue Streak sliding downhill. However, the snow was a bit hard on the bum in places. We then made a rapid descent to the Steinseehutte. Total time taken was 2¾ hours (11:15 to 2:00) which compares favourably with the guidebook time of 3½ hours. (I can't recall which guidebook we were using - 'an old one!')

Approaching Steinsee Hutte (2020 metres) from Route 625

Once again our mattresses are on the top floor, and we set out wet gear around the room to try to get it dry. Over tea we had a discussion on logistics. While waiting for our dinner four of us played cards. Martin was scorer. Martin won.

We had a hut meal and still felt hungry - have decided to have more Mars bar breaks.

We have just had a reading of this day's diary entry. Colin of all people has criticised my writing. I got hostile and resigned from the job. Main feature of hut is no electricity - gas lighting.

Today's route - 5 km with 550 metres ascent

The 'Tramp' was (or rather is) a Phoenix Phantom, one of several 'interpretations' of the Ultimate Tramp, a popular backpacking tent of the time. Main differences from the Tramp, as far as I recall, colour (dark brown instead of green), replaceable tie-on bungee cords instead of rubber bands and of course a different brand label.

Just to let you know: the 'next day' link on this page isn't working (obviously, no problem me getting to the relevant post via the side menu anyway, but thought you'd want to put it right).

Thanks Gayle. A minor cock-up, now mended.
