Burnt Orchid (Orchis ustulata)

Nothing much other than domestic duties went on in Timperley today, so here’s a reminder of summer – a picture taken in the Austrian Alps on 23 July. These flowers are quite ‘petite’ and easy to miss, but when you do spot them – and they are very easy to identify - you can admire the wonderful colouring.

Wow! When I first saw the photo I thought "I've never seen anyrthing as dramatic as that, certainly in the UK." Then I read about the location. A real gem.

It's native to Britain, Conrad, mainly on limestone grassland in the south, though I wouldn't be surprised if Mark R has seen it amongst the limestone near you...
